Our Story
Brentwood Legion Ambulance was established by William J.A. Seymour. He was driven to the hospital after he was the badly injured, sole survivor of a severe Brentwood automobile accident in March 1959.
Because Brentwood did not have its own ambulance at the time, he waited almost two hours for one. Mr. Seymour knew that a change needed to take place in his neighborhood.
By gathering fellow members from the American Legion’s Joseph Loeffler Post 1006 in Brentwood, he was able to start the Brentwood Legion Ambulance. They purchased a 1948 Cadillac hearse and converted it into an ambulance, all while training 25 volunteers. Since then, BLA has grown to over 250 members.
We serve Brentwood, Edgewood and North Bay Shore.

Our Youth Squad
Our Youth Squad, also known as Explorer Post 325, is a co-ed division of the Boy Scouts of America.
Explorer Post 325’s mission is to teach our younger members the knowledge and skills of emergency medical services. In addition to various first aid skills, they are taught cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). In fact, we specifically tailor a curriculum to them that’s similar to that of a New York State First Responder. At the age of 16, they can ride on our ambulances, as well as answer 911 calls with a trained crew monitoring and teaching them.
Our younger members are constantly giving back to the community by attending local events as well.
They are also provided with opportunities to grow within Brentwood Legion Ambulance. A large number of our current members were originally in Explorer Post 325, and have continued to stay with us for years.
We encourage both boys and girls between the ages of 14-21 to join.
